Adyen launches Visa Payment Passkey through Authenticate in the UK

The feature uses device-based biometric authentication for eligible online transactions, replacing some one-time-passcode flows without requiring a new integration for existing Authenticate users.

Adyen launched Visa Payment Passkey in the United Kingdom on October 29 through Authenticate, a module in its Uplift payment-optimization suite.

The feature lets eligible consumers authenticate an online payment with a device-based biometric such as a fingerprint or face scan, rather than completing a traditional one-time-passcode step. Adyen said the rollout is enabled for existing Authenticate users without additional integration work.

Passkeys can reduce friction while keeping authentication tied to a customer’s device, but the experience depends on device support, issuer participation, risk decisions and fallback handling. Merchants also need to understand how authentication outcomes appear in their payment and dispute records.

The UK is the initial launch market, with further enhancements and broader expansion planned for 2027. Adyen did not say that every transaction or consumer will use passkeys immediately, and the announcement did not provide a universal authorization or conversion uplift.
